James Heatherington, CEO of Solar Battery Group sat down in conversation with Energy Minister Chris Bowen & CEO of Smart Energy Council John Grimes to talk about this scheme.
The re-elected Labor Government is now delivering on a major election promise: a nationwide solar battery rebate, designed to make solar storage more affordable for all Australians.
It’s called the Cheaper Home Batteries Program and it allows every homeowner in Australia to be able to get approximately *30% off a new solar battery installation (including labour costs and the product itself) starting from July 1.
- Homeowners who already have a solar battery installed can receive around 30% off an additional or replacement unit.
- Landlords and property investors can receive around 30% off a solar battery installation on every property
- Business owners and public community facility managers can also get approximately 30% off on a solar battery installation on their commercial property
- Households that once avoided solar because it didn’t make financial sense without a battery, will now be able to greatly reduce the cost of a battery through the rebate. Making storage more affordable, and thus a solar system finally more financially viable.
*T&Cs apply. Final pricing may vary depending on the product selected, as rebates are calculated based on the usable kilowatt-hour (kWh) capacity of the installed battery system.
When can you formally start installing a new eligible battery?
Technically, as of right now!
Installations that meet eligibility can begin now, but to qualify for the rebate, systems must not be switched on until July 1, 2025.
What Do These Savings on Batteries Look Like?
With the Federal Solar Battery Rebate, a 10kWh unit which is what most families need, brings the price down to $5,000.
The rebate can only be received through an accredited solar installer. The installer applies the 30% discount as a price reduction on your invoice, and then the installer themselves redeems the value from the Government.
This makes getting the upfront savings easier and immediate for the customer.
Asking our own CEO of Solar Battery Group, James Hetherington, the return on investment that most households will now be able to expect on their solar batteries would be 3 to 4 years.

What This Will Mean for Our Planet
This will be an estimated $2.3 billion from the Federal Government, and it’s predicted to install over one million new batteries by 2030—the year deadline of the Global Renewable Target.
Australia is the perfect nation to make use of an incentive like this, as we already have a lot of homeowners that have got on board solar panels, but have not done the same with solar batteries.
One in three Australian households have solar panels installed.
This is already a grand achievement.
One 10kW solar system produces approximately 40kWh a day, which would save around 47.2kg in carbon emissions. Carried over to a year, this is a reduction of 17,228 kg in carbon.
However, coal and fossil fuels are still in demand to power homes and businesses once peak energy usage times come, when these same properties don’t have a solar battery installed.
Unfortunately, only one in forty have solar batteries installed.
It hasn’t been because of a lack of knowledge of the benefits of solar storage.
The biggest barrier has been cost. Something that Labor’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program will now help close the gap on.
Energy Minister Chris Bowen confirms the Federal Rebate will be designed to stack
Energy Minister Chris Bowen MP talked with us on air to help give more clarity and information on the topic.
Can we just confirm today that these rebates will be stackable?
“I can confirm, absolutely, it’s stackable,” Chris Bowen said.
“So basically, we wanted the states to keep up with their effort and obviously don’t want consumers to have to choose between which rebate are they going to go for. We want them both to apply and that will definitely be the case. Again, there’s a little bit of detail to come from the state ministers about exactly how they’ll make our schemes compatible, but the good news is that they will.”

What This Means for Average Family Household Savings
Analysis by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water predicts that a solar battery could save up to $1,100 off a typical family energy bill for households with existing rooftop solar.
Otherwise up to $2,300 a year off a family energy bill (90% off the typical family bill) for a household installing a new solar panel rooftop and battery.
This analysis is based on nationwide figures, which means further savings may also be able to be achieved, depending on where you live.
As Minister Chris Bowen has already stated, this rebate will be designed to stack with state-based rebates, which may mean greater savings depending on your location.
“The two states with the rebates really are New South Wales and Western Australia, and also to a degree the Northern Territory. Other states have had different loan schemes, but the states with the rebates at the moment are New South Wales and Western Australia,” Chris Bowen said.

What Can Get in The Way of Getting the Benefits of the Solar Battery Rebate?
Not getting the right installation.
In Solar Battery Group’s conversation with Energy Minister Chris Bowen, Mr Bowen emphasised how important it is to have the right solar battery installed. As the rebate cannot be reapplied on the same lot.
“It’s in the country’s best interest that as many people as possible take up the rebate, but do it right, do it once.
“So work with the installer, installer work with the client and please recommend the best possible battery for that person because they’ll only be able to get the rebate once per household.”
Some Tips to Finding the Right Battery and Installation
- Check that the battery you’re recommended to (or want to get installed) doesn’t appear in the ACCC recall list: for e.g. recalled LG Batteries
- Check that the solar installer is certified by Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) for battery installations, you can look up a solar installer by name or licence number here
- Avoid any solar installer that gives you a cold call over the phone. Unfortunately there has been a rise of solar scams after the rebate has been announced, and this is the most common way for these operators to perform.
- As a customer, you can expect to be provided with the technical details of the installation (including safety details, accreditation of the battery and installer, along with the potential energy savings and payback period based on the new solar system or storage additions to the system)
- At the end of the installation, you should receive a signed certificate of electrical compliance or equivalent, that the system complies with all relevant state and territory electrical safety regulations. Once received, your solar battery is considered installed.

Smaller solar battery now, or wait till I can afford a bigger solar battery?
The common recommendation is to get the largest size solar battery you can install now to insulate yourself from rising energy costs and start reducing your bill now. Even if it’s a smaller battery, you will be better off than no battery at all. You can also expand with additional solar storage later, either through expansion packs or an additional battery.
At Solar Battery Group, we also have interest free finance available to give you more options to start reaping the full benefits sooner.
