kWh stands for kilowatt-hour. It measures an amount of energy. On an electricity bill, it shows how much electricity a household consumed. On a battery specification, it describes how much energy the battery can store or make available.
The easiest analogy is a fuel tank. Kilowatt-hours describe how much the tank can hold. Kilowatts describe how quickly energy can flow out of it.
kW and kWh are not interchangeable
A kilowatt is a measure of power at a point in time. A kilowatt-hour measures energy used or stored over time. If a 1 kW appliance operated continuously for one hour, it would use 1 kWh of energy. A 2 kW appliance running for one hour would use 2 kWh. This distinction matters when comparing batteries: capacity indicates the amount of stored energy, while output indicates how much power the battery can deliver at once.
What does a 13.5 kWh battery mean?
A battery described as 13.5 kWh can store up to the stated amount of usable energy when charged, subject to the manufacturer's specifications and operating conditions. That does not guarantee a fixed number of hours for every home. A household using lights, refrigeration and a television will draw energy more slowly than a household simultaneously running ducted air conditioning, an electric oven and a pool pump.
How to estimate battery runtime
A simplified estimate divides usable battery energy by average household demand. For example, 10 kWh of usable stored energy supporting an average 2 kW load would theoretically last around five hours. Real outcomes differ because household loads change, reserve settings may preserve some charge, conversion losses occur and battery output limits apply.
How much battery capacity does a home need?
The answer should be based on actual consumption data. Useful information includes:
- total daily electricity use;
- evening and overnight consumption;
- solar exports;
- seasonal changes;
- high-demand appliances;
- desired blackout loads; and
- planned additions such as an EV or electric hot-water system.
A larger battery is not automatically better. Oversizing can leave capacity regularly unused, while undersizing may provide less evening coverage than expected.
