If you live in the ACT, you've probably felt the pinch of rising power bills. And while Canberra might be Australia's capital, it's not immune to energy costs or the occasional blackout. More homeowners and businesses across the ACT are making the smart move to solar batteries - and for good reason.
At Solar Battery Group, we make it simple. We're not just about selling you a product. We're about delivering long-term savings, reliability, maintenance, and monitoring support, along with a system that actually works for your lifestyle.
The ACT enjoys strong solar conditions, with plenty of sunny days to generate more energy than most households will use during the daytime. The challenge is that peak generation often happens when you're not home. By the time evening rolls around, you're relying on expensive grid electricity.
A solar battery changes that. By storing your excess solar power during the day, you can:
And with extreme weather events and bushfire-related outages becoming more common across the ACT, batteries also provide the reassurance of resilience, keeping your home or business powered when the grid is vulnerable.

From July 1, 2025, the Federal Government launched the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, committing $2.3 billion nationwide to reduce the upfront cost of battery storage. For ACT homeowners, this means roughly a 30% discount on eligible battery installations — making solar storage more financially accessible than ever before.
ACT residents have an additional advantage: the ACT Government's Sustainable Household Scheme offers interest-free loans to help cover the cost of solar panels, batteries, and other sustainable home upgrades. Stacking this with the federal rebate means the upfront barrier to going solar-plus-storage has never been lower.
The rebate is delivered through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) under the national renewable energy scheme. The ACT falls within Zone 3, benefiting from strong solar radiation — around 4.8 kWh/m² per day on average. This reliable solar yield means ACT households are well positioned to maximise the value of their battery investment from day one.
Important update: Changes to the Cheaper Home Batteries Program are coming on May 1, 2026, including a new tiered rebate structure that reduces incentives on batteries larger than 14kWh. If you're considering a larger system, acting before this date could secure you a meaningfully higher rebate.

Today's batteries aren't just storage units; they're smart energy managers. With integrated apps, you can:
In the ACT, many households are also joining Virtual Power Plant (VPP) programs, where your battery can earn you bill credits by trading excess power with the grid, adding another layer of value on top of your savings.
When bundled with a new inverter or solar panel system, the right battery setup can almost eliminate your evening reliance on the grid. That means greater independence, more savings, and complete control over your energy future.

Choosing a solar battery comes down to more than capacity or brand recognition. The right system is the one that fits your home, your habits, and the practical realities of living in Canberra. Here are the key features worth understanding before you decide.

To qualify for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program rebate, your installation must meet the following criteria:
Our batteries are on the CEC Approved Battery List and fully eligible for the rebate. Our entire team is CEC or SAA accredited, so you can be confident your installation will meet every requirement from the moment we begin.
If you're unsure whether your existing solar system qualifies, or which battery size will maximise your rebate, our team is happy to assess your setup and walk you through your options: at no cost and with no obligation.
Don't have solar panels yet? No problem. We install complete solar panel and battery bundles across the ACT, giving you the best of both worlds — and the best of both rebate schemes.
By pairing a new solar PV system with a battery, you can combine the Federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate with the STC solar panel scheme for maximum upfront savings on a single installation.
ACT residents may also be eligible for an interest-free loan through the ACT Sustainable Household Scheme, which can cover the cost of both solar panels and battery storage — further reducing the financial barrier to full energy independence.
Whether you're starting fresh or retrofitting an existing system, we'll help you design a setup that's right-sized for your home, your usage, and your budget.

We understand ACT's energy challenges, from rising costs to weather-related outages. We'll also guide you through what energy efficiency or solar technology rebates are available to you in ACT and handle the paperwork so you can stress less. Whether you require a battery for an existing solar setup or you're starting fresh with a complete system, our team can design the right solution, tailored to your needs.
Savings vary from household to household, but many of our ACT customers see their bills drop by 50-80% once they add a battery. The more power you shift to stored solar energy, the less you pay the grid.
And with the federal Cheaper Home Battery Rebate (launched July 2025), households and businesses in the ACT can claim up to 30% off the upfront cost of a new battery system. This stacks with the ACT's already strong solar uptake, making now the perfect time to make the switch.
Demand for batteries is already through the roof. That means supply shortages are emerging nationwide, so planning early is key to securing your system.

Installing a solar battery is one of the most meaningful steps an ACT household can take toward energy independence but the way you use it determines how much you actually get back. Canberrans have always been early movers when it comes to clean energy, and the strategies below are how smart households are stretching their solar storage further while contributing to a more resilient local grid.
The ACT has one of the highest rates of rooftop solar adoption in the country, and Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) are what happen when that individual action becomes something bigger. A VPP connects your battery to a shared energy network, feeding stored power back into the grid during peak demand periods. In return, participants typically receive bill credits or elevated feed-in rates.
Think of it as civic infrastructure for clean energy: your battery, alongside thousands of others, helps stabilise the grid during the moments it needs it most. For ACT households, this is a natural extension of the territory's broader push toward 100% renewable electricity. Compare available VPP plans carefully to find one that aligns with your usage patterns and financial goals, but for many homeowners, the financial and community benefits make it well worth considering.
Every battery we install comes with a dedicated monitoring app. These tools give you a live view of your solar production, household consumption, and battery charge levels: and over time, they become one of your most practical energy-saving assets.
The real value is in the patterns they reveal. You might discover your home draws heavily from the grid on overcast Canberra mornings, or that your evening usage consistently outpaces your stored capacity. With that knowledge, you can adjust habits, schedule high-draw appliances more strategically, and make the most of your system without any guesswork.
A Home Energy Management System brings your solar panels, battery, and smart appliances into a single, coordinated setup. Rather than each device operating independently, a HEMS orchestrates them: scheduling your dishwasher or washing machine to run when solar generation is at its peak, for example, or ensuring your battery charges fully before the evening demand window.
For Canberra households juggling multiple smart devices or an EV, a HEMS removes the cognitive load of manual energy management. It runs quietly in the background, making decisions that compound into real bill savings over time.
Canberra winters are cold and often overcast, which means your panels will generate less than they do in summer. This is exactly when your battery earns its place. By drawing on stored solar during low-light periods — cloudy days, early mornings, long evenings — you reduce your reliance on peak-rate grid power during the hours it costs the most.
Setting your system to prioritise self-consumption means the energy your panels captured on a clear autumn afternoon is still working for you at 7pm when your household is in full swing. That continuity is what turns a good battery system into an exceptional one.
Most modern battery systems allow you to schedule grid charging during off-peak tariff windows, typically late at night or in the early hours of the morning when electricity is cheapest. This is a useful backstop during extended cloudy stretches or higher-than-usual household demand.
It won't replace the savings of solar self-consumption, but it keeps your battery full and your household covered without relying on expensive peak power. Think of it as a practical safety net rather than a primary strategy: one that ensures your battery is always working in your favour.
The efficiency of your appliances directly affects how long your stored energy lasts each day. Older heating and cooling systems, fridges, and washing machines can draw significantly more power than their modern equivalents. Which means a less efficient home eats through battery storage faster and falls back on grid power sooner.
Upgrading key appliances, particularly space heating and cooling given Canberra's seasonal extremes, reduces the overall demand on your battery and extends how far each stored kilowatt-hour takes you. Over the lifetime of your system, these upgrades compound into meaningful additional savings.
