In many Australian homes, a battery can be added to an existing solar-panel system. The panels do not automatically need to be replaced. However, the best retrofit design depends on the equipment already installed and what the homeowner wants the battery to achieve.

What must be assessed?
Before recommending a battery, an installer should review:

Hybrid-system upgrade
A hybrid inverter can manage solar panels and battery storage within a single integrated system. Depending on compatibility and system age, moving to a hybrid arrangement may provide a cleaner long-term pathway.
It may be worth considering when the existing inverter is approaching replacement, the solar array is being expanded, or the homeowner wants an integrated new system.
Do old solar panels need replacing?
Not merely because a battery is being installed. If the panels are safe, productive and compatible with the proposed design, they may remain in service.
Replacement or expansion may be recommended when the existing array produces too little surplus energy to charge the proposed battery, when equipment has deteriorated, or when future household demand is expected to grow.

Compare complete installed outcomes, not isolated hardware prices. A useful quotation should identify the proposed battery and inverter, usable storage, output, backup scope, switchboard work, monitoring, installation inclusions, warranties and assumptions.
Two quotes can name batteries with similar capacity while delivering different results. One may include backup hardware and substantial electrical work; another may not. One may support future expansion; another may require replacement. If exclusions are unclear, the cheaper headline figure can be misleading. Ask who is responsible for design, installation, commissioning and after-sales support — battery performance depends on the complete system, so accountability should not be fragmented.
A practical decision framework
Start with the outcome, then work backwards to the equipment. A household focused mainly on evening self-consumption may need a different design from one that wants to keep large appliances operating through a prolonged outage. A customer planning an EV or an all-electric renovation should also avoid sizing a system only around today's bill.
Next, separate essential requirements from preferences. Essential requirements might include a particular backup circuit, compatibility with an existing inverter or a hard installation-space constraint. Preferences may include a familiar brand, a particular app or the ability to expand later.
Finally, test the proposed system against realistic conditions. Ask what happens on a low-solar winter day, when several appliances run together, when the battery begins the evening partly charged, and when the grid fails. The answers expose the difference between a technically compatible product and a properly designed household energy system.
