We’ve made big strides as Aussies when it comes to making the switch to cleaner power with renewables, particularly solar. 

Did you know? Australia ranks number one in the world for per capita household solar. What this means: if you add up every solar panel in Australia and divide by how many people live there, each person's "share" is bigger than in any other country. To put it in more visual perspective: Around 1 in 3 homes in Australia now have solar panels installed on their rooftop, according to a 2025 ABS report

We started with being one of the world leaders in renewable adoption with solar PV systems.

Once they have finally become cheaper, now we’re also setting new records with solar battery storage. As of 23rd of July 2026, Australia has an estimated 687,184 solar battery units installed nationwide.

This is a massive achievement. One that Aussies across every state and territory have helped and contributed towards together. Below, we go over how much solar batteries each region has equipped themselves with to secure their energy future.

NSW Solar Battery Adoption

New South Wales is Australia’s largest populated state. With an estimated 8.7 million people, solar has always had a critical mission and a beneficial application here. New South Wales helps lead the nation in transitioning to more shared public transport use. 

How many solar batteries have been installed in NSW (since the Federal Rebate)?

How many solar PV systems are installed in New South Wales?

From 2001 to 23 Jul 2026, 1,175,509 solar PV systems have been installed in New South Wales according to CER data. The enormous uptake of solar already on rooftops meant many NSW residents were already well placed to take advantage of the Government’s battery incentives once they were announced. NSW has the second highest amount of solar PV systems installed as a state, just behind Queensland. 

How close is New South Wales to hitting its Net Zero goal?

New South Wales has a goal of 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030, compared to where they were in 2005. 

Then 70% reduction (on 2005 levels) by 2035, and net zero in 2050.

In NSW Net Zero Commission’s (NZC) latest annual report, projections show NSW will fall short, between 10 to 20 million tonnes, of its 2030 emissions target.

This gap has increased from an estimated 7 million tonnes, previously. While NSW has been progressing in renewables and shared public transport, new coal mine expansions and a new surge in data centres puts these targets at risk. 

ACT Solar Battery Adoption

While small in land mass, the Australian Capital Territory has also contributed massively to renewables. Purchasing 100% of its electricity from renewables, as listed in Climate Council’s 2024 ‘Race to the Top’ report. It also had the highest EV uptake (6.8 per 1000 people).

From 2001 to 23 Jul 2026, ACT has had 67,692 solar PV systems installed across the territory, according to CER data.  

How close is the ACT to hitting its Net Zero goal?

The ACT has committed to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, five years ahead of Australia's national target of 2050. That national target is set out in the Climate Change Act 2022, which also locks in a midpoint target of 43% below 2005 levels by 2030, and requires yearly progress reports. This sits alongside Australia's international commitments under the Paris Agreement, which sets the wider global goal of keeping warming well below 2°C. Under that agreement, each country then sets its own national targets and timelines to help meet that goal. With this in mind, the ACT's 2045 target is well ahead of the national timeline. To get there, it has set its own milestones along the way:

  • 40% by 2020 - achieved
  • 50 to 60% by 2025 - not achieved
  • 65 to 75% by 2030 - on track
  • 90 to 95% by 2040
  • 100% by 2045

These percentages are measured against 1990 emissions levels.

VIC Solar Battery Adoption

Victoria is the second-smallest state by land in Australia, and yet, it is the second-most populous after New South Wales. Victoria is also leading a bold electrification change, with gas being phased out in new homes from 2024. Compared to the rest of the states, Victoria has the third most solar batteries installed since CHBP’s release.

How many solar PV systems are installed in Victoria?

From 2001 to 23 Jul 2026, 892,216 solar PV systems have been installed in Victoria according to CER data. Victoria has the third largest amount of home solar PV systems installed, behind Queensland and then New South Wales. 

How close is Victoria to hitting its Net Zero goal?

Victoria had a 15-20% emissions reduction target by 2020. They smashed it, with a massive 30% reduction in emissions from 2005 levels. Already reaching the range of their 2025 target early. Victoria’s net zero target deadline is 2045, 5 years ahead from Australia’s 2050 own goal. 

Victoria’s Emissions Reduction Targets are as follows:

  • 15 - 20% (below 2005 levels) by 2020
  • 28 - 33% (below 2005 levels) by 2025 
  • 45 - 50% (below 2005 levels) by 2030
  • 75 - 80% (below 2005 levels) by 2035
  • Net zero by 2045

Victoria also has separate renewable electricity targets:

  • 65% renewable electricity by 2030 
  • 95% renewable electricity by 2035

According to Victoria’s Climate Action Targets, the state will meet its 2045 net zero early, in 2028.

QLD Solar Battery Adoption

Queensland has been the number one adopter of solar across Australia. With a nickname of ‘the Sunshine State’ and the Great Barrier Reef as a treasured landmark to protect, Queenslanders have long had a strong commitment to reduce their environmental impact and an abundant means of doing so. Behind New South Wales and Victoria, Queensland is also the third most populous state with an estimated population of 5,712,124 as of 31 December 2025.

How many solar PV systems are installed in Queensland?

From 2001 to 23 Jul 2026, 1,203,203 solar PV systems have been installed in Queensland according to CER data. These numbers make Queensland the Australian state with the most solar PV systems across the nation. This has really positioned Queensland well to take advantage of cheaper home solar batteries.

How close is Queensland to hitting its Net Zero goal?

Queensland smashed its 30% reduction by 2030 (compared to 2005 levels) eight years ahead of schedule, according to Queensland’s Minister for Energy and Clean Economy Jobs, Mick de Brenni. As of February 11 2026, Queensland’s emissions are expected to be at a 34.4% reduction of 2005 carbon emission levels

However, Queensland has also delayed releasing its emissions reduction roadmap to meet their next goal, a 75% reduction (compared to 2005 levels) by 2035, by up to five years. The deadline for publication has been pushed back until October 2030. These plans will outline how different sectors across Queensland (energy, resource, agriculture, transport, industry, etc) will contribute towards the legislated state target. 

Following this the Minister for Energy and Clean Economy Jobs is still expected to decide on and release two statutory interim targets for 2040 and 2045, to help prepare Queensland to meet net zero by 2050. 

SA Solar Battery Adoption

In 2024, South Australia had the largest share of residential households that had both solar rooftops and battery storage. South Australia faces more issues with energy reliability with the grid. On the 28th of September 2016, South Australia experienced a statewide blackout with power being restored in 8 hours however other areas experienced a loss of power for days. Since then, many new big solar battery projects have been approved and are expected to support the grid during extreme weather interruptions.

How close is South Australia to hitting its Net Zero goal?

South Australia’s climate action goals are to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 60% by 2030 and to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. 

Their intermediary goal before 2030, is to achieve 100% net renewable electricity generation by 2027. Is SA on track to achieve this? South Australia has achieved over 75% renewables in 2025, which gives reason to believe SA is well on track. 

WA Solar Battery Adoption

While Queensland is known as being the Sunshine State, it’s actually Western Australia that gets the most sunshine (counting in clear days and highest amount of annual sunshine hours) compared to the rest of the country. Western Australia is home to around 3,076,528, or about 3.08M people. With large amounts of rural properties and business, energy reliability is important for many Western Australians.

How close is Western Australia to hitting its Net Zero goal?

Western Australia is committed to following a whole-of-government 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 80 per cent below 2020 levels. What this means, is the emission reduction focus is just on the state government itself, not across the whole state of WA. 

WA remains the only state in the country without an economy-wide 2030 target.

TAS Solar Battery Adoption

Tasmania is the only Australian state or territory to have already reached net zero. Now Tasmania’s renewable energy goals are designed to help plan for the future and support the rest of Australia’s progress towards net zero by 2050.

How close is Tasmania to hitting its Net Zero goal?

Tasmania has already met net zero in 2014. Tasmania is the first and currently only Australian state or territory to do so, and continues to maintain its status of net zero. In 2020 they also achieved 100% self sufficiency. 

They now have a new target of achieving 200% of their 2020 demand to support the rest of Australia with cheaper, reliable and clean energy, and help the nation achieve the 2050 net zero goal.

To achieve this, Tasmania has new targets for renewable energy generation:

  • To produce 15,750 gigawatt hours of electricity in one year by 2030
  • To produce 21,000 gigawatt hours of electricity in one year by 2040

NT Solar Battery Adoption

The Northern Territory covers one sixth of Australia in landmass, yet it has the fewest people across all Australia of all regions (states and territories). An estimated 267,500 people live in, according to ABS December 2025 findings.
